Hacia una definicion de performance

The central idea of this work is to show the uncertainty of what a performance actually is and develop a meaning for performance. Primero, Diana taylor explica que las performances “funcionan como actos vitales de transferencia, transmitiendo saber social, memoria, y sentido de identidad a través de acciones reiteradas.” It is the re-creation of behavior through various practices and events separated from others around them. (separadas de otras que las rodean.)

The performance is also referred to as a lens so that the spectators can see and analyze the event. They perform events, behaviors and subjects that occur in our everyday life such as citizenship, gender and ethnicity but we see it from a different perspective as a spectator. The act of performance provides the knowledge of both the real and the built set of practices of what happened historically. This begins to explain how there are two perspectives on the truth of performances. The first perspective is that they provide a “deeper character” within the culture to show a better representation and the second is that it is an artificial representation of what is real which can provide a bias. Many people also argue that you should not document performances because you cannot capture the “en vivo” aspect of it. Taylor also talks a lot about the translatability of the word “performance” between cultures because in Latin America it only has one meaning of “performance art” and there are many meanings of performance in western cultures.
