Leadership Approach Paper

Leadership is classified by variables that are emphasized the most; characteristics of leaders; characteristics of followers; and characteristics of the situation (Yukl, 2010). These variables determine the approach method for leadership. This paper will define the Trait Approach and why that approach is the most plausible. Strengths and weaknesses will be identified and an example given that matches this leadership approach method.

The Trait Approach

The trait approach is one of the earliest and emphasizes attributes such as personality, motives, values, and skills (Yukl, 2010). The trait approach focuses on natural talent, and great knowledge of the subject matter. I believe that some people are born with certain talents, and meant to be leaders in a specific field. During childhood, the individual is further nurtured and supported in whatever the talent is.

This type of person is motivated, driven, and persuasive. They may possess traits that others do not. They are a natural born leader and possess traits that lead to success. Successful leaders definitely have interests, abilities, and personality traits that are different from those of the less effective leaders (Management Study Guide, 2008-2012).

Strengths and Weaknesses

The trait approach has both strengths and weaknesses. For strengths, the trait approach is a pleasing theory that is backed by a lot of research. The trait approach has a strong foundation and basis and can provide knowledge and understanding of the leader element in the leadership process. The trait theory can serve as a yardstick against which the leadership traits of an individual can be assessed (Management Study Guide, 2008-2012).
