1. Introduction

Within this report I will discuss several topics which are interconnected by their rolls in sound production, recording and editing. A working knowledge of the science and method of application of these topics is essential too the successful sound /studio engineer. My aim for this report is to give a clear and informative view into the physical processes and skills required to utilise these topics in the best way possible.

2. MIDI Programming

Programming/writing in MIDI provides the user with an abundance of tools and options for editing and mixing their track. MIDI data can be displayed in a number of different ways. The two main views are Notes and Regions. Notes view display a traditional 'piano roll'-style representation of all the data in the track. Regions view behaves more like an audio track, with data grouped together in chunks. They can be chopped up and manipulated using exactly the same methods as with audio regions.  In Regions view the edit tools operate on chunks of the track in the same way as with audio tracks. In Notes view, the Grabber tool can be used to pick up and move individual MIDI notes. The Grabber can select several notes by clicking and dragging to lasso around them. The Trimmer also behaves differently in Notes view, adjusting the lengths of specifically selected notes instead of regions.

Another benefit of using MIDI to create a track is the huge variety of software instruments and external MIDI sound generators available. Software instruments include plug-ins such as xpand2 and external sound generators are available in keyboard and drum pad forms along with many more.

Both can be used interchangeably.

Create a MIDI track and an Aux track. Click the inserts tab on the aux track and select your desired plug-in i.e. xpand2....
