Samsung Electronics

Introduction:

Samsung Electronics is a South Korean multinational electronics company headquartered in Suwon, South Korea.(1) It is a subsidiary of the Samsung Group which is affiliated in various fields of businesses other than electronics and is the world’s largest technology company by revenue since 2009. The company Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-Chul in 1938 in Taegu, Korea. The company started as a food exporter dealing with groceries in the city and shipped items like dried fish and noodles to China. (2). Samsung Electric Industries was established as a subsidiary of Samsung Group in 1969 in Suwon, South Korea. This division mostly focused on making televisions. Samsung's first black and white TV went on sale in 1970 and by 1976 one million TVs were produced. This was the beginning of Samsung creating electronic appliances. Given their success, Samsung began to focus even more on electronics and invest heavily on research and development. During the 1980s it expanded into making washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves and personal computers. In 1988, Samsung Electric Industries merged with Samsung Semiconductor & Communications to form Samsung Electronics, the company we know today. The newly merged company started producing memory, hard drives and integrated chips for use in personal computers which remains a big part of the company’s business at present. Samsung Electronics launched its first mobile phone in 1988 in the South Korean market but was poorly received. According to company legend, one of Samsung earlier mobile phones did not work when it came out in 1995. When Samsung's chairman Kun-Hee Lee (Lee Byung-Chul’s third son) found out, he visited the factory where the phones were made and reportedly had the entire inventory burned.
