Lab Report

1. Is Wireshark open source or propriety? (7 points)

Wireshark is open-source

2. What is seen in each of the three panes that display the packets seen on a local area network? (7 point)

Packet list pane – Shows each packet on its own line. Applies coloring rules to different packets. There are multiple columns displaying different information about that packet.

Tree view pane – Shows the header of the selected packet. It shows the hierarchal view of the packet and what is contained.

Bit view pane – Shows the raw data of the packet.

3. What does a display filter do? (7 points)

It will filter packets so only certain packets will be displayed in the Packet list pane.

4. What does the protocol column show? (7 points)

It shows what protocol the packet is using (TCP, UDP, etc)

5. How do you expand the details in a layer of the packet in the middle frame? (7 points)

You can expand the details in the tree view by clicking on the “>” symbol.

6. In frame 1 what channel is being used? (7 points)

It is use a channel type of 802.11b

7. In frame 1 what frequency is being used? (7 points)

Channel frequency: 2437. I'm guessing this is in Khz so 2.437 Ghz.

8. In frame 1 what is the signal level? (7 points)

19 DB

9. What type of frame is frame 1? (7 points)

It is a IEEE 802 frame

10. In frame 1 what is the beacon interval in milliseconds? (7 points)

Beacon Interval: 0.102400 [Seconds]
