History

University of Washington Medical Center is one of the top medical centers in the nation. The medical center specializes in cardiology, high-risk pregnancy, neonatal intensive care, oncology, orthopedics, and last but not least organ transplantation. 1954 was when the hospital opened and started seeing the clinical staff by 1959 was when the hospital actually opened for the patients. Also the school of medicine opened its doors in 1965 which a surprising fact when it first started out it was one of the smallest schools in the nation for teaching healthcare. After another few years by 1961 they started seeing patients for acute pain and seeing how it works and trying to figure out ways to treat it. 1968 is when the first Pacific Northwest kidney transplant was done which is pretty amazing. If doing the first kidney transplant on the Pacific Northwest wasn’t enough it also includes by 1980 the staff had performed cardiac catheterization as an outpatient procedure, along with the first heat transplant in 1985 on the Northwest. Going forward to the date of 1990 is UWMC performed the first liver transplant on the Northwest. In 2008 a really important fact only eight hospitals and the only United States facility to participate in a Pilot Project. Which you use a surgery checklist which helps prevents errors before going to the operating table. Reason why they would do something like this is because it help prevents errors before they start and preventing the potential of really hurting a patient. “UWMC surgeons perform the 500th lung transplant and 500th heart transplant, also the 1,500th liver transplant” in 2009 today as of 2013 it celebrates fifty four years of top notch schooling/medical center.
