1. Early 1600s – English colonies on Atlantic coastline

2. 1763 – English take control of Canada

3. 1775-83 – American colonies rebelled against England and become the USA. Atlantic to Mississippi River

4. 1789- Constitution created

5. 1803 – Jerrerson: Louisiana from Frace added to the USA – Mississippi to the Rocky Mts. 100% increase

6. 1800-1890 – Native Americans removed from valuable land and placed on reservations. 1860s – Alaska is acquired. They were more :pests than people”

7. 1865 – Homestead Act – US gov’t gives land to anyone who will farm it. IMMIGRATION LAWS DON’T EXIST UNTIL THE EARLY 1900s – Anyone can come.

8. 1860s – Rockefeller begins his CONSOLODATION OF THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY.

Carnegie starts CONSOLODATION OF STEEL INDUSTRY

HARRIMAN AND VANDERBUILT CONSOLODATE THE RAILROADS

9. 1890 – US government declares “frontier closed”

- Who is upset and about What?

-Begins in 1789: US Constitution permitted slavery. And slaves could be counted when determining the number of representatives in House of Representatives.

-North and Western States expand: requiring no slaves

-industrial lands

-lots of space

South expands its one crop economy and expands westward. 2/3rds of whites in the South have no slaves.

-Cotton, sugar cane, tobacco

-One crop-economy in South

Was there a strong movement in the North to abolish slavery? NO!

- There were minority organizations that wished to free slaves

-Northern workers feared that if the laves were free, they’d come north and work in factories for less than whites

1860 Elections- South feared that a Republican Party victory would restrict the movement of slavery further West. Lincoln, as a republican is eventually 11 southern states secede from the USA.

Lincoln calls on the N. States to raise armies to bring the south back into USA.
