Kyushu Island (From top down, left to right)

Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture: The Mongols landed at Hakata Bay during both attempted invasions of Japan

Nagasaki: 2nd atomic bomb 9 Aug. This is the specific location of the Dutch settlement of Dejima, Only permanent European settlement allowed in Japan for over 200 years.

Shimabara Castle: Location of Shimabara Uprising (1637-1638). Over 40,000 Christians massacred by the end of the uprising. This marked a major event that solidified the 'sakoku' policy.

Mt Aso: Japan's largest active volcano. The surrounding area is famous for its hot springs, and has a vibrant tourist industry.

Minamata prefecture: mercury poisoning

Kagoshima/Satsuma: Live volcano overlooking Kagoshima City, capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, and home to roughly 600,000 people. Present-day Kagoshima Prefecture was home to the Satsuma domain, one of the domains the Tokugawa family worried about. Eventually, Satsuma one seed of the Meiji Restoration (see also Yamaguchi/Chōshū on this map).

Hokkaido Island (From top down)

Ezo-Hokkaido: Colonial expansion of Japan following the Meiji Restoration. Meiji authorities officially claimed Hokkaido as a Japanese domain beginning in 1872.

Matsumae: The Matsumae Domain was the only area on the land of Hokkaido that was considered part of Japan in the 17th century. The land of Hokkaido was called Ainu Moshir, which means "Land of the Ainu" in Ainu language.

Shikoku Island

Tosa, Kochi Prefecture: this was the home domain for the famous Sakamoto Ryoma who attempted to form an alliance between the two larger domains of Satsuma and Choshu.
