Homework Assignment Week 2

Create a list of the five most important technologies, policies, and/or procedures that you think would deter a hacker from accessing your systems, and state why you think your choices would have the most effect on deterring a hacker.

Encryption

First, let’s make sure the term, encryption, is understood. According to the webopedia with the IT Business Edge, encryption is defined as “the translation of data into a secret code. Encryption is the most effective way to achieve data security. To read an encrypted file, you must have access to a secret key or password that enables you to decrypt it. Unencrypted data is called plain text; encrypted data is referred to as cipher text.” (webopedia.com, 2013) What this is saying is that in order for a message to go from the sender to the receiver, whether one person can read it or whether more people can read it, if you don’t want everyone reading it, you need to encrypt it. This is hiding the message so that only the people with the keys can read it. The two top types of encryption are the asymmetric encryption and the symmetric encryption. Top secret information passed from one agency to another, as well as military information, is kept secret by using encryption. Sure a hacker could possibly break into it, but hopefully before he does, a security alert will notify of a possible intrusion so that it can be prevented.

Physical Security

Physical security of your computers and servers is essential to protecting everything it holds inside. To protect the servers and computers, you must make sure that a hacker/intruder does not gain physical access to these machines. The main servers of a business should be in a secure area, large office, where only certain people have access. Not everyone who works for the business needs to have access to this room.
