Article: Stephen Billett, Darryl Dymock, Greer Johnson & Greg Martin (2011): Overcoming the paradox of employers’ view about older workers, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, 22:06, 1248-1261. This paper will present that Stephen et al.’ (2011) study of overcoming the paradox of employers’ view about older workers aged over 44 years old is an interesting but problematic piece of research.

Many countries are facing a labour shortage as the world’s population is growing older. Companies will soon have no choice but to employ older workers. However, business practises requires attention, as there is a paradox. This is because older workers are often seen as a burden with younger workers preferred in hiring process (David et al. 2012).

Summary of article The author’s objective in the article is to communicate and highlight the importance of retaining and sustaining older worker aged over 44 years, the challenges faced by countries with advanced and developing economics that has ageing populations and low birth rates.

The article reviewed that though many employers are in need of retaining the service of older worker, employers hold negative thinking about their work performance and the ability to adapt, and will only employ them in the last resort.

The article presented the ways on how to overcome the paradox of employers’ views in order for them to accommodate and fully utilise the older workers aged over 44. It also draws on the researches of the current Australian policy implement for employment, retention and training of older workers as well as how this policy influenced the negative employers’ attitudes and practices towards older workers.

The article also highlighted that new attitudes, policies and strategies should be established in order to have productive working relationships between older workers and their employers.
