SCENARIO ONE:

You are the winner of the ‘Australian of the Year’ award, giving your acceptance speech, which should address what you believe to be the most important characteristics of a ‘true Aussie’.

I would like to begin by acknowledging the honourable Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard, the Australian selection committee, organisers who have made this day possible, and all those who have gathered here today.

Our population today is 22, 815, 444 - It is a privilege to be a part of that number, to be standing here, to accept such an honourable award; to be named the 2013 Australian of the year. This is a great honour for me, as a teacher working in the education field. I feel sure that my colleagues will see this as a great endorsement to children’s education in Australia.

Today we celebrate the very best of our great nation, those who reflect the true Australian spirit. Mateship is in the veins of all Australians, and has brought the nation together during tough times. Many courageous Australians come together to lend a helping hand to underdogs – As seen during the Queensland floods where thousands were left homeless.

I believe we are a great nation because of the unique qualities each individual Australian possesses. We Aussies are loyal, compassionate and respectful towards each other. That is our true wealth. The most common quality in Australians is courage, and I have the courage to imagine an even better nation and the determination to face the future without fear.

As a teacher, I have dedicated a major part of my career to designing and creating new learning programs for children in Australia. My goal is to provide every child in Australia with good education, and make sure their literacy levels are top notch. To this date, there are about 17% of children missing out on proper education, and 45% of Australians school kids are struggling with literacy and numeracy.

I hope my innovative programs will help children develop the necessary skills...
