The Powers of Love

In the play Othello, the trials and tribulations of love are ultimately tested. Othello is a story that shows a young man that experience many obstacles of life. He is faced with problems throughout his daily life. Othello cannot view his disposition in a genuine way. He is not confident in his relationships or himself. He lacks many mature qualities. Therefore, Othello does not succeed in his own mind. He lacks a positive perception of himself, making it impossible to feel a sense of solitude in his life.

One of the main themes in Othello is how his accomplishments in the military and his love differ. Above anything, Othello defines himself as a soldier. At the beginning of the play his profound love for his career deeply affects his marriage. The lifestyle of Othello’s career does not meet Desdemona’s idealistic views on how a marriage should be. She still goes and accompanies her husband out of love for him. She wants to support her husband and love him like the ideal wife she strives to be. Othello’s military career also gives him a way to earn approval, appreciation, acceptance, recognition, and gratitude in the Venetian civilization. The Venetians in the play are commonly frightened and apprehensive about the possibility and expectation of Othello’s societal entrance into white culture in the course of his marriage to Desdemona. The Venetian society thinks a lot of him as a soldier and respects his career choice in many ways.

Othello uses his triumphs and achievements as a soldier to gain Desdemona’s love and affection. He tells her many stories of his battles, experiences, endeavors, and adventures as a soldier. When all of Othello’s battles are fought he is left with no triumphant tales to tell. Othello feels that he has lost a sense of manhood. Without his career, he feels that he is not as masculine. He no longer has a way of showing his nobility o defending his reputation in a communal location...
