Abstract

This paper briefly explores my role as a team leader within my organization as it pertains to author Jim Collins (2001) and his concept book titled, Good to Great. Furthermore, I will also briefly examine my leadership role and my opinion in regards to my current level of leadership in accordance with Collins’ Level 5 Hierarchy model.

LEVEL 5 LEADER

I would like to briefly evaluate my current leadership role as team lead of an employee engagement group at Amery Regional Medical Center. My original role at ARMC is in Human Resources as a Recruiter. I have had no true lead positions up until a year ago when I was nominated by members of Senior Management to lead a new team that was formed with the purpose of further inspiring and supporting our organizational employee engagement initiatives via our company compact called the “Journey of Excellence”. The Journey is essentially a set of guiding principles that saddles our organizations mission and vision.

My professional background in regards to leadership is, well, minimal to be blunt. I haven’t had a long-term track record as a leader, manager, supervisor, etc. My experience has been very spotty. For example, I worked as a shift lead in one of my first jobs right out of high school. That lead role did not include very many additional duties than that of a regular staff member, but I was still held responsible for our small team of three during whatever shift I was scheduled for. There was one project that I was hired to lead that was quite the large undertaking. It was for an organizational organization that assisted in the move of medical files and the installation of new shelving units. I led many work groups, sometimes all alone, consisting of anywhere from five to thirty temporary workers. Needless to say, that was years ago.
