The Art of the GSU

In the article The GSU: Finally, Something to Respect, former PUP bigwig Godfrey

Smith presents various scenarios which he uses to support his theory that the idea of the then newly formed GSU, the Gang Suppression Unit, should be spread across across Belize and not be stationed solely in crime infested Belize City. Smith calls the GSU incorruptible, professional, and well-trained; and fearless. It is a group of young men with high moral and camaraderie, apparently capable of any task. Before the article begins Smith tells of a story that he uses to describe exactly how poor the mentality of a typical street gangster is. If only this mentality remained at the street; Smith points out that the general public in Belize has this same concept of believing that the laws don’t apply to them. Because of this, Smith claims, we as a society “badly need a forceful authority that is incorruptible, respected, even feared.” (Smith) Smith uses strong language to bring his point across, with many attention grabbing words and examples scattered throughout the article. Reflection Godfrey Smiths writing style is very effective. He first uses an example that his readers can feel with; by saying the two young “pissing tail” boys, of creole descent, we get a fairly clear picture of what the lads may have looked like. By using those words he arouses curiosity, making way for additional questions about the boys to cloud the mind, perfectly suiting his purpose of

After capturing attention, Smith gives a few key statistics, just enough to make the situation sound relatively severe, furthering the grasp of attention.
