Introduction
This work will be an analysis and a report of the book, Islam: Historical, Social, and Political Perspectives by ProfessorJacques Waardenburg. The book is a presentation of twenty essays on various aspects of Islam religion, both in history and in the present. The essays in the book are classified into eight sections. The first section is the beginnings and it deals with the transition from the perspective of pre-Islamic understanding and reason; this is a critical part of Quranic messages. The next two sections dwell on Islam as a religion and attaching it with particular symbols and signs. This section also discusses the questions regarding the rules of the interpretation of Islam and respective spiritual features. Sections four and five of the book deals with ethics in Islam;this includes matters like human rights and Muslim identity together with Islamic social functions. Sections six of the book introduce the reform movements of the 19th and 20th century. This section attaches special attention to the developments in Saudi Arabia as well as the puritan features of the modern day Islamic revival movements. The last two sections of the book, section seven and eight, analyze contemporary issues in Islam such as Islamic ideologies, Islamization process and policies, the ideologization of Islam as well as the political matters of religion. In the entire book, the author demonstrates the links between religious, interpretation and other uses that are made of Islam together with the context with which they are made.
