Raport of Etnographic Studies in Cafeteria Green Cafe Nero

My project concerns ethnographic studies. Research I made had place in one of the most famous coffee shop chains in the city center of Warsaw, Poland during a free day (Sunday). I wanted to observe how people behaviors in such a place. What you can observe when you are watching them very carefully for a longer period of time. Are they any regular behaviars which are similar for most of the people? Also the questions which I ask myself are :What kind of ticks cafe is using to attract clients? What kind of people habbits they trying to use?

I choose a self-service cafe in Warsaw for my studies – Green Cafe Nero on Chmielna street on sunny Sunday (09.02.2014) from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Cafe is quite big with two rooms and around 25-30 tables and although other smaller cafes around were almost empty this one had most of the tables taken. Interior design was very nice in warm colors and stylish and comfortable sofas and armchairs. Beside they had a lot of books and newspapers avaible for customers. Additional international and calm music – generaly very nice place to spend some time. What was interesting that although huge glass walls on the entire length of cafe from the street side and very sunny day, all the lamps inside were on.

Cafe offers a lot of different kinds of coffee, tea and other drinks and delicious pastries and sweets. Everything looks just great and tasty. The menu was written on the wall behind the bar but there was no English menu but all the bartenders speaks English. I decided to seat next to the wall just to have a perfect view on people entering to the cafe and also standing in the queue and ordering. Only I had limited view on second room, but I was controlling it few times as well.

What I observe was that till 2 p.m. most of the clients were women alone or what was more often in pairs. Only two couples of men and only few lonely men. After 2 p.m. I start to observe more and more...
