1. Summarize each of the Classical theories of management discussed in class AND /OR outlined in your text (remember I like details – lots of facts).

Classical Theory: old way of operating business. “My way or highway” approach. You are seen as an extension of a machine, when that extension breaks, it is thrown away and replaced.

Scientific Method: AKA-classical approach: the systematic study of relationships between people and tasks for the purpose of redesigning the process to increase efficiency.

Frederic Taylor founded the scientific method 4 ways to be successful

a. Simplify jobs to simplest form for workers. Specialization of jobs.

b. Establish a lot of rules. More rules you make, more rules that are there to make workers do job effectively.

c. Motivate workers through contests within the workplace.

d. Tie workers to the job through pay incentives.

Taylor’s 4 Principles to Increase Efficiency in the Work Place

1. Study the way workers perform their tasks to gather all knowledge the workers posses, and experiment with ways of improving how tasks are performed.

2. Codify the new methods of performing tasks into written rules and standard operation procedures

3. Carefully select workers that have capabilities to do the task and train them to follow the established rules and procedures.

4. Establish a pay system that rewards performance that is above the acceptable level.
