Maybe it’s the smell of the red dirt on the field or the crack of the bat in the warm summer air but for whatever reason Americans have always loved the game of baseball. Baseball has always been considered America’s past time, but time has never passed up our passion for the game. As Americans we all have a soft spot for the game that is so closely entwined in the history of our country. Many of us grew up playing little league ball or going to the batting cage, though it was always a favorable option to head on down to the ball park to catch a game under the lights. How many of us can say they remember walking into the stadium, glove in hand, hoping to catch that foul ball that was just overdue to come your way? Baseball has impacted our country in countless ways, from blockbuster films like The Sandlot and Field of Dreams, to our annual holiday some call the world series, and everything in between. We all grew up learning the history of baseball weather it was reading about Jackie Robinson through our textbooks or listening to stories our dad told of how the great bambino hit his way to the 1928 world series. While many of us never played passed our grade school years we still find it an arduous task giving up the game our nation grew up on. It is not uncommon to see soldiers using their down time to play a quick game of ball while over seas, or to see a group of middle aged men join together in the park to play a weekly game of softball before they head back to work for the week long grind. Anyway you look at it, the boys of summer have created a sport that our nation can never thank them enough for.

While the game our nation came to love began in good hands it has recently fallen into misguided hands. Baseball has become a major money raking industry creating highly lucrative careers for those involved. However, baseballs widespread popularity has become the key to its downfall. Players and owners have lost sight of why the started playing the game...
