Why drop coverage for spouses that can be insured by their own company? The decision to drop healthcare for spouses, is this shift a sign of bigger changes to come with healthcare? UPS announced that they are cutting health insurance for spouses; by 2014 this was very shocking for me as well as other long time employees of UPS. The first thing I thought about was the new healthcare reform Act, the affordable care Act, this will cost companies a lot of money; and this will drive change, and cut backs, as well as conflicts with couples.

The company memo that UPS provided, stated the decision to eliminating spousal healthcare is to help reduce cost under the new healthcare Act, as well as for other reasons. The change applies to working spouses, who can access healthcare coverage through their own employer. It does not apply to spouses that cannot access their own health insurance, but for how long rule last? There was a time with UPS, the delivery package giant in the industry; they offered the best healthcare compensation package to employees, and their families, now with this new change it is said to affect as many as 15,000 employees within the organization. This new change to the compensation is disappointing; why must employees and their families suffer due to the Healthcare Reform Act? A healthy workforce is a more productive workforce; it’s a plain and simple concept.

This change has sparked plenty of criticism within the organization, not only is the change to the benefits disappointing, but it’s very frustrating to say the least. This change will impact families no matter which way we view this issue. This will impact the finances within the family, because now husband or wife has to be on a different insurance plan, which will add to more monthly bills.
