Popular American Culture

Popular culture is everywhere, it's part of an individual's everyday life. Almost everything we do revolves around popular culture. According to Dr. Anthony Curtis (2013), "In mass communication, the term popular culture refers to messages that make limited intellectual and aesthetic demands through content that is designed to amuse and entertain audiences." Dr. Anthony Curtis also states that entertainment, music and sports are pop culture. He further explains how it's expressed in many forms of mass communication through movies, newspapers, radio, music, television, advertising, and books.

Tracing back to my childhood, there are many things that defined and shaped my generation. Growing up, I was highly influenced by popular culture. My families beliefs ideals and beliefs are passed down from generation to generation. For example, quinceneras and sweet 16's were a big hype all through middle school and high school. Between the girls if you were anyone important you had to have either one to stay "popular." It then became competition, the bigger your party was the bigger person it made you around your peers. This completly made me forget the significance of a quince, I missed the whole picture and just focused on how much my parents were spending and obviously the more the better. This inquiring that pop culure is constantly changing. Each year or even month there's a new trend that both young boys and girls are following and living up to.

Like I mentioned above, Popular culture plays a significant role in my life, mainly through social media and networking. Social media is basically today's popular culture. Most of our population owns either a facebook, twitter, or instagram account. The bigger question would be, who doesn't have any of these accounts?
