UNDERSTANDING WORD RELATIONSHIP

• In some ways words are like families. Just as there are different relationships among members of the same family, there are different relationships among words. • Words ending –nym are often used to describe different classes of words and the relationships between words. Being able to understand and identify such words will help you enrich your vocabulary and thus, improving your reading skills.

SYNONYM

• A word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or other words in a language. • They can be lifesavers, especially when you want to avoid repeating the same words over and over. Also, sometimes the word you have in mind might not be the most appropriate word, which is why finding the right synonym can come in handy.

ANTONYM

• Antonyms are words that have opposite or contrasting meaning. They can be divided into 2 categories:1) Graded antonyms- these expresses relationship based on a scale. 2) Complementary antonyms- these are pair of words that represent two opposite possibilities

• Graded antonyms deal with levels of the meaning of the words, like if something is not “good”, is may still not be “bad.” There is a scale involved with some words, and besides good and bad there can be average, fair, excellent, terrible, poor, or satisfactory. • Complementary antonyms have a relationship where there is no middle ground. There are only two possibilities, either one or the other....
