One of the most large-scale and complex problems America deals with each year is that of domestic violence. This crime is one in which leaves the victim (more commonly a female) filled with fear, anxiety, and shame; feelings that no one should ever have to feel. According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. However through stricter law enforcement, improved hospital reporting technique, nationwide education and counseling, this problem can be reduced. Furthermore domestic violence has many names; family violence, battering, wife beating, and domestic abuse. All of these terms refer to the same thing, abuse by a marital, common law, or a dating partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence is not limited to physical beating. It is any behavior that is intended to overpower and control another human being through the use of humiliation, fear, and physical or verbal assault. Domestic violence is a very important issue in today’s society because it has such a profound negative affect on the abused; mentally and physically. Also verbal abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse. Portland has established an agency to try and help combat this problem but with lack of funding it is very hard. To at least solve one issue PEACE Domestic Violence Agency has applied for a grant.

Grant proposals differ from program to program however they have the same process that makes the difference in whether it is supported financially. It is very important to be aware of the dates that agencies specify for applying for a grant as to when they are accepting applications. In the case of PEACE, a Domestic Violence Agency, the grant starts by identifying the program’s critical needs within the targeted community.
