Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not only a son, husband, father and minister, but one of the most influential civil rights activists of the 20th century. Dr. King came from a long line of ministers and in turn became one himself, he followed in his father’s footsteps to not only preach the word of God, but to try and end discrimination. His belief that all men were created equal was so strong, that he risked, and eventually lost his life for his goal to end racial discrimination. He believed that through faith in God and peaceful protests that he could change the world and end discrimination. Dr. King’s undying faith and his strong will were what guided him to become the leader we celebrate today.

Dr. Martin Luther King grew up in a loving environment. His father was a minister and even though Dr. King grew up in this devoutly religious home, he went through a period of time in his youth where he questioned religion and its practices. It was not until his senior year in college when he took a Bible Class that his faith was restored, and it was then that he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. (Martin Luther King Jr.(a), 2013) Dr. King’s father, Martin Luther King Sr. also fought against racial discrimination and it is believed that his actions had a strong influence on his son. His family appears to have always been a strong presence in his life. I believe that part of his drive came from a combination of influence from his father, and also wanting a better life for his children that led Dr. King to fight so hard for the greater good and end discrimination against blacks.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a devout Christian, and it is important to understand that in order to truly understand where he gathered his strength and courage. Dr. King was plagued with threats because of his cause, and it was in the times of weakness that he sought God. His religion was his strength.
