Chapter 8 GEC100wk2d2 Assignment by Charles Stevens

1. How does the author define empathy? Why is empathy so important ( paragraph 2)? Why would feeling empathy make someone less likely to bully or less likely to watch in silence?

The author defines empathy as the ability to put yourself in someone’s else’s shoes and try to think how you might feel if the same thing would happen to you and by doing so could make them less likely to be or put up with bullying.

2. Why does the author contrast child- rearing practices in two ancient Greek cities— Athens and Sparta ( paragraphs 5 and 6)? Do these two examples relate to her main point? How?

I believe the author uses the child-rearing practices of Athens and Sparta to show us that at an early age we can be taught how we are to react with other people and that what we were taught is likely to stay with us as adults, thus supporting her main idea that bullying could possibly be avoided.

3. What causes someone to bully another person? What “ payoff” does the bully get? What is the payoff for those who join with or ignore the bully?

If I read the article correctly the cause of bullying is not so much that there’s a payoff but the lack of empathy and understanding of other people’s feelings.

4. A recent study shows that today’s college students are 40 percent less empathic than students in 30 years ago. Do you believe this disturbing finding is true? If yes, what could have caused this change?

Yes I find it disturbing to find we are 40 percent less empathic and believe the lack of family values over the years could be the problem, some examples would be more one parent families and less Christin homes.
