If you had a disagreement with your supervisor at work: Instead of talking back and making the situation worse I would ask for a break. Taking a break will help bring down my anger and help me clearly thing the situation through. I would use the time to nourish myself and think of the situation through the other person perspective.

If your class paper or project receives a falling grade from your professor: I would look over the paper or project over before taking to the professor. Reading your work over a 2nd or 3rd time helps you catch different errors, maybe my professor caught something I did. Even if I did or didn’t find anything wrong with my paper or project I would go and discuss why it was a falling grade. Knowing what was done wrong will help me for the next assignment.

If you are having a disagreement with someone whom you care deeply: When having a disagreement I would take the time to listen to what the other person has to say instead of just insisting that I am right. If it were to get to the point were talking to each other was making the situation worse I would walk away for a few minutes to relax. Sometimes when we start arguing we don’t take the time to think everything through taking a breather makes the situation better.

If you see that someone is struggling and having a hard time “making it”: I know how important it is for me to make it and I know I depend on others to push me when I’m down. I would do the same for anyone else who would need it. Instead of telling the person “you can’t” I would help them realize how they can. Helping another person learn skills on how to manage time and stress levels makes their life easier and you instill it more within your own life.

Now that you have the chance to apply your guiding statements to several situations, on a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate its effectiveness to you and to those involved? Why? Discuss.
