The Scientific Method and Experiments

Observation/ Experiment:

During the winter, you spread salt daily on your driveway to melt the snow. In the springtime, when the lawn begins to grow, you notice that there is no grass growing for about 3 inches from the driveway. Furthermore, the grass seems to be growing more slowly up to about 1 foot from the driveway.

* Might grass growth be inhibited by salt?

Introduction:

Depending on where you live you might get snow during winter time. Snow means fun for the little ones but not so much for the adults, especially when they need to use their vehicles. In this paper we will be analyzing the use of salt in winter time to melt the snow in a drive way and the effects that it has to the environment around it. Salt is commonly used to melt the ice and snow and keep it from refreezing.

Hypothesis:

We believe that the salt is most definitely affecting the growth of grass in the driveway.

Prediction:

If we have two houses we can conduct the experiment, one of the houses will use salt and the other one won’t use salt. This way we can confirm our results.

Controlled Experimental Method:

For this experiment we will be using two houses in a community at Amherst Massachusetts during winter time. The weather in this state is very unpredictable, but people in Massachusetts usually start seeing snow during the months of November up until late February or even April. In this case we are starting in December and finishing in March.

Control: House 1 Experimental: House 2

This house won’t be using salt to melt the snow, they This house will be using

Will be doing it the old fashion way; using a shovel....
