Lend Lease

On the date of September 1st 1949 at 4:45 AM the invasion of the small western european country Poland by a German army lead by Adolf Hitler officially marked the beginning as what would come to be known as World War 2 or WWII. The Polish army, undermaned as it was with less than a 700,000 fighting men and equipped with a diminutive 500 warplanes along with a smattering of armored vehicles stood no chance against the invading Nazis. By comparison Hitler had deployed five fully equipped German armies with a combined ground force of 1,500,000 million soldiers supported by a combined force of 200 tanks and 1900 warplanes.

By the morning of Septemeber the 7th only 6 days later Nazi front line units where within spitting distance of the Polish capital city of Warsaw.In the face of overwhelming odds Polish High Command evacuated Warsaw for the southeast of the country.Unfortunatly becouse of this the High Command lost contact with its main fighting frontline troops throwing the polish forces in disaray. On the 13th of September Polish forces attempted a counter attack on the Nazi armies flank,altho the attack managed to stop the german warmachine the Nazis superior numbers and firepower all but destroyed the attacking Poles. With the time given to them by the counter attack the remaining army troops in Warsaw augmented with civilian volunteers managed to construct a passable defence of the capital city.

During the third week of September Polish army forces had regrouped and were starting to see some success on the battlefield with the Nazis sustaining the heaviest casualties around this time. Key strong points around the Warsaw area as well as the city itself still lay in Polish hands.
