4. What is your reaction to the thought that we are just tiny specks in an infinite universe? Do you think that thought can tell us anything about whether and how we can lead meaningful lives?

In the Meaning of Lives it states, “…We are tiny specks in a vast universe. It is a thought that is apt to be upsetting when it first hits you…” At first when thinking this way, and understanding that we are seen as “tiny specks” to Wolf, it does come as a surprise. But as I thought about it more, it is completely true. In my opinion, we are all different and we all were born different. The universe is a concept that we as humans can’t even grasp. There is always more to it, and there are no boundaries. So how can we say that we are NOT tiny specks in it? In an infinite universe, with no boundaries, it would be selfish to say we are more than a speck. Life is meaningless if we change perspective. If you were to say our lives had meaning, than that is saying there is a purpose. What is it? Were we written as humans, and human existence in general, to have a purpose? The blob has a different purpose than the useless person than the bankrupt person. In the end, we are just tiny specks in this infinite universe.

This thought tells us a lot about how and whether we can lead meaningful lives. In perspective we are meaningless. So when in perspective what runs the human race? Money. In society we must have money to lead a life of prosper. But does money define us? To some the answer is yes. Money overtakes the mind and ego overtakes the soul. But to others, to live a life of meaning it means to follow God. Become one with God. So while reading Meaning of Lives it occurred to me that in the end we all have our own perspective; and through this perspective we lead our own lives filled with whatever “meaning” we think life is.

In the end life seems to be the real question. In the end we are just tiny specks in an infinite universe.
