Analysis of Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft Accidents Caused by Engine Failure

Robert F. Kersey

St. Johns University

Abstract

Experimental amateur built aircraft represent 10 percent of the current fleet of approximately 33,000 general aviation aircraft. Experimental amateur built certified aircraft annual flying hours show a slow but steady increase as opposed to a steady decrease in certified general aviation aircraft flying hours over the past 10 years. Though only a small percentage of general aviation aircraft are categorized as experimental amateur built they represent a disproportionate number of the reported accidents. Experimental amateur built aircraft with non type certified engines or automobile conversion engines represent a majority of the engine related accidents in these aircraft. The United States surprisingly had the least amount of regulation and oversight of many countries. This report intends to investigate the relationship between experimental amateur built accident rates and nontraditional powerplant installations.

Analysis of Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft Accidents Caused by Engine Failure

Experimental amateur built (E-AB) aircraft represent 10 percent of the current fleet of approximately 33,000 general aviation (GA) aircraft. E-AB certified aircraft annual flying hours show a slow but steady increase as opposed to a steady decrease in certified GA aircraft flying hours over the past 10 years. Though only a small percentage of GA aircraft are categorized as E-AB they represent a disproportionate number of the reported accidents (NTSB, 2012 & Wanttaja, 2012). In 2011 E-AB aircraft were involved in 15 percent of accidents and 21 percent of fatalities (NTSB, 2012 & Wanttaja, 2012). The number one contributing factor in E-AB accidents from 2001-2011 occurred due to loss of control followed by engine failure or loss of power. Examination of all accidents by the NTSB in 2011 showed engine failure or loss of...
