St. John the Apostle

I chose the name St. John the Apostle for my Confirmation name because I think it is very special. My grandfather was named after St. John the Apostle as well. My grandfather reminds me a lot of St. John because they have the same values and beliefs. I, myself try to have the same values as St. John the Apostle too.

St. John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the Greater. In the Gospels the two brothers are often called after their father “the sons of Zebedee” and received from Christ the honorable title of “sons of thunder”. He was originally a fisherman until he was called from Christ to be one of his disciples. St. John was sent into the city to make preparations for the Last Supper. He leaned on Christ at the Last Supper and took his Mother into his care. He became a prominent part in the founding and guidance of the Church. St. John traveled around speaking the word of the Lord.

I chose this Saint because I would like to live my life trying to be the best person I can be. I believe St. John was the best he could be. St. John believed in the word of the Lord and always wanted everyone to love one another. He was a teacher and hopefully someday that is what I will be.

Early Christian art usually represents St. John with an eagle, symbolizing the heights to which he rises in the first chapter of his Gospel. In the thirteenth century the chalice was adopted to symbolize St. John referring to the Last Supper and which St. John was handed a cup of poisoned wine and the poison rose in the shape of a serpent.
