Functional Areas of Business

When I decided to pursue a Master’s in business at the University of Phoenix, I had three reasons why getting a master’s in business would be essential to my future career. I wanted to a new career; fulfill a long time personal goal of mine to obtain my degree in business. A specific concentration will come later. I am getting the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills I need to be successful not only in my current career, but my new career as well. I am learning how to advance from the position I am in now to having my own national account in the near future.

I currently work under the national account manager for a major insurance corporation. I have been manager of several departments during my time here and I found two functional areas of business that I am particularly interested in. Those areas are marketing and human resources. These interests are due to the training and internships I received while working directly with the national account manager for this corporation and, my graduate studies, and the results of my career interest profile. The career interest profile has helped me better understand my areas of strengths and weaknesses.

A manager’s role within the functional areas of business is to lead, plan, oversee, plan, and operate within the organization. A manager must work well with an organizations stakeholders as well as the organization itself. The manager must stay inside of their budget that is set aside for them. Managers will often times divide their operations into separate units. A manager is responsible for production, sales, marketing, finance, distribution, customer service, administration, research and development and human resources.
