Article Review

This article over the cardiovascular system explains how the heart works and how it pumps blood throughout the body. The heart sits in the middle of the chest in between the lungs, behind the breastbone. The heart works involuntarily to keep blood flowing so a person stays alive. There are four chambers inside the heart: left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium, right atrium. During contraction the heart chambers become smaller, forcing blood out of the atria and into the ventricles. As it goes from there into a large blood vessels. The two large blood vessels are arteries: the pulmonary artery and the aorta. The pulmonary artery transports blood to the lungs to be oxygenated. The aorta transports oxygenated blood throughout the body. Blood supplies oxygen to the tissues and organs in the body and removes Co2 to the lungs where it is then breathed out (exhale). Cells from the immune system and nourishment from the digestive system travel in the blood until they reach their destination in other tissues and fighting off infections in the body.

Blood Vessels: tubes that carry blood through tissues and organs.

Oxygen: The life supporting component of the air.

Carbon Dioxide: produced by respiration and is observed by plants when expired by humans.

Nutrients: substance providing nourishment essential for growth and maintenance of life.

Lungs: pair of organs located within the rib cage look like balloons responsible for gas exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Cardiac Muscle: involuntary striated muscle found in the walls and foundation of a heart.

Nerve Signals: wave electric and chemical activity along a nerve fiber that stimulates or inhibits the action of a muscle gland or other nerve cell.

Septum: A partition separating two chambers of the heart.

Atrium: into the upper two cavities of the heart where blood is passed to the ventricles.
