What Culture do you Wear

Most every nation, group of people and religion has a different tradition or symbol of their culture. Each of these represent who they are and what their beliefs are. These symbols are influenced by a variety of different things. History of the country and their religion are large factors. In Argentina, a large symbol of their culture is the gaucho. The gaucho is worn mostly by men in Argentina, typically men that are considered a cowboy in the United States.

The gaucho is a traditional symbol of the Argentinean character “gaucho”, who was “the nomadic and colorful horseman and cowhand of the Argentine and Urugayan Pampas, who flourished from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century”, as stated in the Britannica (2014). The guacho is pretty much extinct now and is mostly a tale that is passed down from parents to children. The traditional gaucho is typically “baggy trousers that are fastened with a leather belt adorned with coins and silver and an elaborate buckle”, as stated on www.everyculture.com (2014). The gaucho is often seen paired with a stray hat and a handkerchief around the neck.

The gaucho is typically worn by men in Argentina, but it is not uncommon for a woman to wear a gaucho. If a woman is not wearing a gaucho, she can be seen wearing a long skirt with a baggy shirt that is gathered at the waist and the sleeves. The skirts can be bright colors or have floral designs. The women will typically wear something in their hair that matches the skirt.

The clothing of Argentina is not worn because of any culture requirements or because men are dictated to do so. The gaucho is mostly worn for comfort and for working on the farm. The gaucho was a typical outfit of a cowboy. Farming is something that has always been important to Argentina.
