Leadership Challenge:

Standing Up to a Charismatic but Unethical Leader

1. As a member of the department the first thing I would do is observe the way the department is being led. Then perhaps address my concerns to the leader about the department first before mentioning anything about the lher personality. I would explain that if even one person is unethical it puts the entire department at risk. After I talk to her and she is not forthcoming, I would then state concerns to supervisor. I would explain that it's not about her but about the company and the growth of the department.

2. I believe it will be best to refrain from sharing my concerns with other department members. Doing could escalate the situation and cause even more problems. It is very important that I express my concerns to my supervisors. As stated previously, the success of the department is extremely important and the whole department should not suffer from one individual’s greed and selfish ways.

3. Firstly, I would make sure that the agenda of the company is being followed according to protocol. That is despite what the leader says or tell me to do, compare it to the actual agenda of the company and if I notice that things are adverse and not what they should be, I would suggest other options that would make the department as a whole better. Also, I would get opinions of the other members of my department and see if the methods work for them without attacking the leader/supervisor. Getting my coworkers opinion on the method of training or work given is different from addressing any concerns I have with the supervisor.

4. The leader may be ruthless and express her dissatisfaction with me while making it difficult for me to work in the department. Alternatively, expressing my concerns with her supervisor could mean putting the success of the department first therefore giving the department the opportunity to grow, develop and expand.
