Spinal Cord

The Spinal Cord is a major part of the body system. The Spinal cord is a long, thin tubular structure that has a lot of the nervous tissues connected to it. The Spinal Cord extends from the brain. The Spinal Cord extends from the Occipital bone, which is basically the back of the head, to the first and second lumbar vertebrae. The Spinal Cord is so important because it can be a matter of walking or not. The functions that are controlled by the spinal cord are mobility, sensory, and coordination. It transmits neural signals to the rest of the body. The spinal cord is protected by 3 layers called spinal meninges. There is the Dura mater, the Arachnoid mater, and the Pia mater.

I wanted to learn more about the spinal cord because I have a cousin whose boyfriend was shot in the back. The doctors said that the bullet only grazed his spinal cord. He has been paralyzed now for almost 3 years because it happened on Christmas day in 2011. So what has had me so puzzled and wanted to find out the real function of the spinal cord is how the bullet only grazed his spine and he has no mobility in the lower part of his body. Once I did some research I learned that the spine is damaged some and is not functioning properly to tell the lower part of his body to function as in walk, stand, even using the restroom. That led me to know that even though our spinal cord has 3 layers of protection we much still do everything in our power to add that extra protection
