Nonverbal Communication

What is Nonverbal Communication? What this means is that messages are expressed by other than linguistic means. I chose this topic because to me actions speak louder than words and can be just as effective as verbal communication. Both of these types of communication relate to interpersonal communication. It relates because either way, people perceive the message that’s being conveyed. Even if they interpret it wrongly they still get the jest of it.

According to the text book, Looking Out, Looking In, Nonverbal Communications vocal communication is given by, vocal tone, rate, pitch, volume, etc.” (Table 6.1 pg. 188, Adler & Proctor II). Non-vocal communication is given by, gestures, movement, appearance, facial expression, touch, etc.”(Table 6.1 pg. 188, Adler & Proctor II). Nonverbal communication in my opinion is powerful. If someone were observing me what would they think my nonverbal communication was saying? Would my furrowed brow portray stress over this assignment? Would the tapping of my foot show agitation because my younger sister is getting on my nerves because she is being loud when I am trying to concentrate? Identity management is probably the most crucial part of nonverbal communication. How do I manage what others think of me by what I say with my actions and movements, as well as my instructions?

According to Nonverbal Communication-The Documentary by GeP Petto TV, uploaded on December 11, 2010 on YouTube 60% of communication is nonverbal. It connects all of us. Nonverbal communication is what you are not saying. 38% of communication is tone of voice, 7% is spoken word, while 55% is Non-Verbal. The media interpreted nonverbal communication as the most predominant form of communication. When you add visual and vocal components of communication together you can see that nonverbal communication accounts for 93% of the impact of your message....
