Cultural Factors with International Sports

With televised sports being in great demand here in the U.S., many sporting leagues are looking overseas for new markets; however, there are several cultural factors that may impose a problem. One may be the fact that in some countries, the citizens may not like American sports such as football and hockey. This could mean a weak viewer base, which would not be profitable. Another problem they have to overcome is women sports. Some countries do not let their women drive cars, let alone play sports.

Being Appropriate for International Markets

One way franchises can insure their products are appropriate for an international market is by using a multidomestic approach. This strategy can help a company respond more quickly and efficiently to local market needs (Thill, 2013).

Import Tariffs

I believe that tariffs should not be placed on imports unless the foreign company is attempting to dump and flood the market. While tariffs help protect domestic products, there are many mal effects that may come from this. Imposing tariffs usually make products more expensive for consumers. When trading partners retaliate with their own tariffs, it raises the cost of doing business for exporting industries (Sanders, 2014).
