The debate has raged for over two hundred years, evolution against creation. So far, no one has been able to fully support or disprove one or the other, and it looks like there is no end in sight. Both sides have their strong points and weaknesses, but neither seems to cover all the bases. Many scientists are undecided on the matter while many others are torn between science and their religious beliefs. Some have even found a balance between the two.

Since no one saw the beginning of life on earth or can ever know for sure for that matter, people have developed their own theories. One of the theories is that of creationism. Creationism is the belief that God created the universe and everything in it. (encarta.msn.com/dictionary). This belief is based in various religions’ holy books, including the Bible and the Torah. Creationists include Christians, Muslims, and Jews. There are varying degrees of this belief. Some creationists take their respective holy book literally and don’t believe there is any symbolism in it. Christian creationists that take the Bible very literally may say that God created the earth in exactly six days and rested on the seventh. More liberal Christian creationists may say that although God did create the earth, the seven days may be just a figure of speech.

Creationism explains a lot in the world today that evolution can’t. In many instances, new species appear that have no apparent ancestors. “A View of Life describes it: ‘Beginning at the base of the Cambrian period…all the major groups of skeletonized invertebrates made their first appearance in the most spectacular rise in diversity ever recorded on our planet.’” (Life – How did it get here 60). This information implies that single celled organisms didn’t evolve into these more complex organisms, it seems that they just appeared much like the story of creation describes it.
