Dr. Katherine Wallace (AY2014/15)

( Writing Concert Reports

Assignment Overview: Attend any two concerts (&/or lectures) of Baroque or Classical period music (see attached list). Write a report on the event, foussing on a significant piece or pieces of Baroque or Classical music.

Reports should be 1-2 pages in length (300-600 words), typed, double spaced, 12-point font, on white background with 1-inch margins. Make sure your name and matric number are clearly visible at the top of the report. For external concerts please attach the concert program or ticket to your report.

Reports are due ONE WEEK after the event (ie. if writing about the Recital on August 15, your report is due on August 22). Your first report must be submitted no later than 25 September, 2014. You may submit your report through IVLE, place the printed report in Dr. Wallace’s mail-box (main office), or hand-in during class.

Instructions:

1. Choose your concerts or lectures well in advance. ONE of your reports may be from a performer’s perspective.

2. Before the concert or lecture, briefly research and read about the music, artists, lecturers or composers: write down some expectations you have. If you are writing from a performer’s perspective, keep a journal for the weeks leading up to the concert or masterclass, describing your preparation for the event. Read through the suggested questions (see below) and write down some of your own.

3. Arrive early at the concert or lecture, so that you can read the program notes (if any), then relax and enjoy the experience.

4. Take brief notes on the concert or lecture and your responses during breaks between pieces or during the intermission (if in the audience), and immediately following the presentation (try not to take notes continuously throughout the performance as this can be distracting).

5. Expand your notes into a complete report. It may be helpful to write an outline first...
