Introduction of Cloud Computing

Mell and Grance (2011) from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) suggests that Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing resources over the internet and provides a way for individuals and business to use their computing resources managed by third-party service providers. The resources, namely networks, data storages, user applications, servers and services are provided by a shared pool. In the traditional way, data and programs are kept in users’ own hard drive which can only be accessed exclusively within its own computer, while cloud computing allows individuals and businesses to use the service over the internet to store information or use applications at any time and locations that network connection is available. This report will provide the basic concepts of cloud computing and the ways used to improve business operation.

Deployment models

Cloud computing consists of 4 deployment models. Before the data is moved into cloud, businesses need to consider which model is the most suitable and for them and their database.

* Private Cloud:

Private cloud refers to internal data centres of a business or other organisation, not made available to the general public (Armburst, et al, 2010: 51). If computing resources are a centre piece of the business, this cloud infrastructure diminishes the potential security and control risks, while a higher level of security is required.

* Public cloud:

When a cloud is made available in pay-as-you-go manner to general public, we call it a public cloud (Armburst, et al, 2010: 51). This cloud infrastructure is owned and operated by cloud provider such Amazon and Google which allows the flexibility within business to increase significantly and reduce the expenses remarkably.

* Communication cloud: Mell and Grances (2011) states that this service exists where several organisations share access to a private cloud. This may be...
