Case Study: Input Output Devices in Aviation The Body of Your Paper What computer technologies do you recognize being used in the videos? I saw enterprise software on Linux operating systems. There were touch screen PCs with the ability to be controlled by joystick and mice. What benefits are derived from the application of computer technology to controller – pilot communications? The Controller-Pilot Data-Link Communications (CPDLC) is an air/ground data-link application. The CPDLC enables the exchange of text messages between controllers and pilots. The CPDLC runs along traditional voice communications. This provides pilots and controllers with another channel for communication. On this channel, routine request can be made via text instead of bogging down the system with voice communications that are better suited for traffic direction. With the CPDLC, you will never again have to say the words “SAY AGAIN?”. All messages are in written form. And because you can read the text messages, the workload is reduced for both pilots and controllers. This is less tiring for crews and controllers. (Eurocontrol, 2014) What are the challenges or risks of using CPDLC? There has to be proper coordination among airlines and countries. Not every Airline nor airplane uses the same system. Air traffic controllers have to use ATN, FANS, and FANS 1/A systems ensure safety. Event though CPDLC communication is slower than voice communication, it doesn’t affect the efficiency of having all necessary information available as text for the pilots. This information is typical routine messages where time is not an immediate factor.
