SILING LABUYO (Capsicum frutescens) AND MADRE DE CACAO (Gliricidia sepium) LEAVES EXTRACT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TERMITE KILLER

INTRODUCTION

Over $2 billion are spent annually in the U.S. controlling or preventing termite infestations. In North Carolina, the main problem is with subterranean termites, i.e., termites that normally live below ground and may move up into a structure where they cause damage. The purpose of this study is to find how to kill termites using the raw materials that are stated, siling labuyo and madre de cacao leaves. The component of siling labuyo and madre de cacao has a property that could kill termites. Siling labuyo has a component of capsaicin, which is very irritant to insects and produces a burning sensation in any tissue when contact. Madre de cacao has a component of coumarins, which is a toxic substance that can kill almost all types of pests and insects.

The researcher wants to conduct this study because it is much cheaper and it has been proven that the raw materials can kill insects individually.

Question/ Problem:

General Statement of the Problem:

* Are the extracts of siling labuyo and madre de cacao leaves as an effective termite killer?

Specific Problem:

* Which proportion of siling labuyo and madre de cacao would be the most effective in killing termites?

a) 25:75 (250g extracts of siling labuyo and 750g extracts of madre de cacao)

b) 75:25 (750g extracts of siling labuyo and 250g extracts of madre de cacao)

c) 50:50 (500g extracts of siling labuyo and madre de cacao)

d) Control (no extracts added or raw materials)

Hypothesis:

Null: The extracts of siling labuyo and madre de cacao will not be effective as a termite killer.

METHODOLOGY

Materials needed:

1kg of madre de cacao leaves (each setup)

1kg of siling labuyo (each setup)

4 transparent containers

Tap water

4 spraying bottles

4 funnels w/ cheese cloth...
