THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL IN CREATIVE AND THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES

During this assignment I will be looking at the role of the professional when planning and doing a creative and therapeutic activity in a health and social care environment. Each professional should know their responsibilities when caring for each service user to ensure the safety of everyone in their care.

EMPOWERMENT

Empowerment is about encouraging a service user to develop more skills and understanding in what activity they may be doing. It's important to help and support your client but your aim is to get them to do things more independently which will give them more self-confidence and control which in turn will increase their own self-esteem. If you was doing a cooking class with a group of service users who have low confidence because of a disability then you could get them to join in with preparing the ingredients and after you've shown them how to prepare the food you could ask them to have a go at doing it themselves. If they had any problems you should always be their to advise but ultimately you should be letting them do as much of the preparing and cooking that they feel comfortable with. This is a good example of empowerment.

METHODS OF COMMUNICATION

It's important to make sure that each of your service users communication skills are taken into account before you start and therapeutic and creative activity. Their are several different ways of communicating such as, British sign language, Makaton, body language or even Braille for those who may be blind. Communication is vital when working with service users so you should always make sure you are well prepared before you start any activity so you can help them improve their own communication skills which will help them to get involved and give them more confidence when working with others.
