5 Stages of Team Development

Forming

The forming stage occurs when individuals put together in a team and they first meet each other. In this meeting, team members are introduced to each other. They exchange information about their backgrounds, hobbies and experience and form first impressions of each other. They learn about the project they will be working on, discuss the project's goals and start to think about what role they will play on the project team. They are not yet working on the project. They effectively find their way around and how they might work together.

Storming

The second stage would be the storming stage where the team starts to work together. This stage is extremely essential for team development - most especially for a newly constructed team. In this stage, the team put effort to show their potential in order to earn their role and initiate their ideas. They have different opinions on what should be done and how it should be done - which causes conflict within the team. As they go progress through this stage, with the guidance of the team leader, they learn how to solve problems together, function both independently and together as a team, and settle into roles and responsibilities on the team.

Norming

The team starts to work more productively as they step into the norming stage. They emphasize more on working together as a team. And starts to respect and value each other’s opinions. In this stage, the team has agreed on their team norms in order to work effectively together, it includes discussing information and resolving team conflicts and also what methods could be used to get the work done. The team members begin to trust each other and actively seek each other out for assistance and input. Rather than compete against each other, they are now helping each other to work towards a common goal.
