Chapter 27, 1 John: Blessed Assurance
1. The apostle John wrote 1 John sometime between AD 85 and 95.

3. 1 John 5:13 states: “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
4. John wrote 1 John in order to (1) teach Discernment regarding a proper relationship with God; (2) affirm his readers’ faith; and (3) warn his readers about false teachers (303).
5. While the exact nature of the false teaching encountered in 1 John is impossible to define, some clues exist that enable us to grasp the broad contours of the false teaching that John writes to combat. Note the following characteristics:
* Denial that Jesus is the Christ (2:22–23).
* They do not know Him because they do not keep His comandments.
* They denied that Jesus had come in the flesh (4:2–3; cf. 2 John 7).
* They denied the ______ ____ of the cross of Christ (c f. 5:6).
6. Discuss the significance of koinōnia in 1 John (305).
7. 1 John 1:9 states: “If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purfy us from all unrighteousness” (NIV 1985).

9. 1 John 2:15–17 clarifies that loving God is incompatible with loving the world.
