DREAMER

I’ve always believed that the things people fear the most are the things they don’t understand. All I can ask myself now is why things turned out the way they did. I search deep into what’s left of my memories to find the answer, trying desperately to mend the scattered fragments so that maybe I can understand why this had all occurred. It seems futile at this point, but as I linger onto what small vestige of humanity I have left, I don’t see any other alternative. As I think back to last month when this all began, I hear an all too familiar sound in the distance. A sound I’d heard a thousand times before; a sound that hasn’t been completely drowned out by the sound of my own screams.

Prologue

I found myself standing in front of my house. It was usually dark outside as I stood at the foot of my driveway; my gaze fixed on the window of my bedroom which was closest to the front door. I never realized till now how eerie my small, three bedroom house looked at night without the porch light on. Probably because I rarely ever left my house these days except to go to my job, or to see friends every now and then.

I suddenly found myself sprinting up the driveway towards my bedroom window. The blinds were shut, and I didn’t see any lights on. Nothing out of the ordinary, as I never liked having them opened anyway. I stood there for several minutes; staring intently at the window. After what felt like an eternity, I decided that it was time to go inside. As I walked through the front door, I saw that none of the lights were on. I always left the kitchen light on if I knew I wouldn’t be back until late, so I wouldn’t end up fumbling around in the dark, tripping over furniture. I guess I forgot.

The thought of my broken habit vanished as I opened my bedroom door. The room was completely dark. I flipped the switch to turn on my lamp, but the room was still pitch black. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness that enveloped the room, I could almost make out the...
