Bernard of Clairvaux was one of the most influential figures in the theological life and practice in the 12th Century. His influence propelled him far above many of his contemporaries, but his humility solidified him in the minds of many as an effective follower of Christ. Bernard’s devotional classic, “On Loving God,” explains what divine love is and how people grow and develop in the perfect love of God, which has come in Jesus Christ. The importance and measure of the love of God provides the framework for the opening chapter of his work. Bernard frames his argument by asking leading questions. It seems as if he desires for the reader to come to his or her own conclusion under his guidance. God himself is the reason why people should love God. The definition of love Bernard is interested in talking about is love in its highest sense, which is loving God so totally that the Christian does not even think of self. One recognizes this kind of love is a lifelong journey, during which there is growing in several important stages. Bernard’s “On Loving God” would help the church to understand God’s love and to fulfill the great commandment: the first and greatest commandment is to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

Bernard’s statement is full of rich meaning. He starts several passages with broad statements followed by an analysis of the point being made. He takes his time to unwrap each statement and relates deep theological issues to those who would not be as learned. He states he is “a debtor to the wise…but [he] must consider simple folk too.” People love God for Himself because nothing is more reasonable and nothing is more profitable. Bernard uses a two-point structure to frame the answer to his opening question. This is an example of Bernard’s willingness to create understandable answers to his thought-provoking questions.
