Using an extended example of an issue or an industry, discuss why and how European businesses engage in lobbying.

Lobbying activities has evolved over multiple channels over the years to influence European Union policy process towards maximizing and emerging of interests of businesses and the policy makers. In this essay we will firstly discuss on lobbying of businesses in the EU with examples on issues leading towards the recent increase on businesses engaging in lobbying.

Business interests are the main reason towards the development and changes in the legitimacy across the whole of the EU public policy process. It has influence the European policy process in ratification of the Council of ministers, agenda setting and formulation of the European Commission forums, European Parliament committees’ interpretation and implementation of regulations throughout the policy process involved. (Coen & Richardson, 2009) As, relationship and communication between businesses and the policy makers connect towards sharing of information thus creating equal and fair decisions.

Initially, lobbying was made towards its own national, in the duration of 1984 and 1994 the European Union interest group exploded as transfers of regulatory functions from the member states to the European institutions as the introduction of the single market issues causing realization by businesses that lobbying involved national and towards the European institutional channels. (Coen and Richardson, 2009) The most advised political channel was to lobby the Commission directly, thus increases the number of political activity which was attributed by the single market legislative boom as a pulling factor, whereas majority voting acted as push factor for many of the businesses.
