Social Promotion

Abstract

This paper will provide my opinion to social promotion. It will also state whether or not I agree with it or not and my reasons as too why.

Social Promotion

Social promotion is the advancement of children who would have otherwise remained in the same grade to the next. The pros of this change are as follows: students would not feel stigmatized by being bigger than the kids that would bin the same class with them; they would avoid low self-esteem about being held back a grade and some students might work hard next grading period to remain with their peers. The cons to social promotion are that students are as follows: the students are not learning; does not help the interest of society as a whole; it sends the wrong message to impressionable teens; and it takes the trying harder out of learning if children know they will just be promoted.

I do not agree with social promotion. I think that social promotion does a injustice to our school system. It does more harm than good. Children go to school to learn and develop. School teaches children ideas and concepts they will employ of the rest of their lives and it is scary that children are just being promoted on the basis that they do not want them to have a psychological imbalance. What becomes of these children fifteen to twenty years later when they have been social promoted to graduation of high school and they are out there on their own. The lack of an education breeds crime and misbehavior. Children that are social promoted are not being given an opportunity to real excel in school and in life. I feel this way because they will always lack the education that is required to make it America. A lot of the students that are being social promoted are from ethnic backgrounds that need more educated individual in it, program such as social promotion it hinders the ability of those community to advance because before long...
