Throughout my life I’ve written many many things but I think the most effective thing I’ve ever written was a poem to my husband who had left me. It’s a rather painful memory and I don’t even like to talk about it, however it showed me that properly conveying my thoughts and emotions does more than just make me feel as though I’ve vented off some steam. Because I beautifully stated how I felt using metaphors and ideas it caused my husband to finally give in and speak to me after days of ignoring me. And, within just a couple of days he had come home where he belonged.

I’ve been reading for approximately 25 of my 29 years and throughout that time a lot of things have been emblazoned into my memory. I think the one thing that stuck with me the most would be the part of Little Women where little Beth is sick and about to die and her mother and sisters take her to fulfill her last wish. I think it always got to me because , Beth was portrayed as an “innocent”. She was the sweetest and quietest of the sisters and the most even tempered and so when she got ill it was a huge injustice. Without the descriptive writing of Louisa May Alcott I doubt this scene would’ve been half as captivating to me. The descriptions of the feelings the sisters felt watching beloved Beth fade, the scenery surrounding them as they take her on her last outing, even of how lonely and quiet the house was without Beth’s piano chiming away as she played it all made this particular part of the book stand out to me. What I think this taught me was that the right descriptive words, put in the right place, and used in the right way make a world of difference. If you use the right wording you can make even the most fantastical of places, or creatures come to life in the mind of your readers.
